Students urged to stop playing ‘Assassin’ game By William M. Welch, USA TODAY
After the horrors of the Virginia Tech massacre, a popular game on campuses nationwide called “Assassin” is raising concerns and prompting warnings from police.
Officers in three communities in Illinois and Pennsylvania urged students to halt the games, which involve ambushing other players with sometimes realistic- looking toy guns or other objects, after the Virginia Tech shooting last week that left 33 people dead.
Police say they worry that players, mostly college and high school students, would be mistaken for real- life killers, endangering themselves and others.
“Virginia Tech has heightened everyone’s concern and alerted them to what’s going on in the country,” said Leland Grove, Ill., Police Chief Mark Gleason. “It’s just terrible.”
Students themselves in some instances have halted games in light of the Virginia Tech shootings.
“Just out of taste … we decided to cancel for this year,” said Trey Keeler, a junior at Hampden- Sydney College in Virginia, who was overseeing the game played by more than 80 of the 1,060 students.
Assassin, according to police and players interviewed this week, is a game in which players have the goal of “killing” or eliminating other players while avoiding similar attacks on themselves. Typically each player is assigned a target, who can be attacked with a designated “weapon” during certain times of day or night, usually outside of classrooms or after school. When successful, the player receives a new target; the eliminated player is out of the game.
The winners are the last player standing and in some cases also the player who scored the most “kills.” Often a pool of money is split among the winners. A typical game can last for days or weeks.
Ryan Mulligan, a University of Illinois junior, runs an Internet site that manages and keeps records of Assassin games, www.campusassassins.com. He said the site is overseeing more than 50 games at college campuses in the USA, Canada and England and has seen “a downturn” in games on the site since the Virginia Tech killings.
“I hope it’s just a localized anomaly,” he said. “I don’t think it will affect things in the long run. But definitely people will have to re- evaluate how they play the game.”
His program suggests using socks or spoons as weapons to eliminate players but he said game organizers can set their own rules and weapons. Often they are water guns, paint- ball guns or, as at Hampden- Sydney, toys that fire soft foam “Nerf”- type projectiles.
“A lot of people are trying to move away from using fake weapons,” Mulligan said.
The game has been spreading in high schools as well, generally without approval of school officials.
“We certainly don’t endorse any game that’s called Assassin,” said Cara Zanella, communications coordinator for the school district in Peters Township, Pa., a southern suburb of Pittsburgh. “The word ‘assassin,’ in light of all the school shootings, is just inappropriate.”
She said school officials learned that students at Peters Township High School were playing Assassin when a group came forward after the Virginia Tech shootings and sought assistance in canceling the game. They were allowed to use the school’s facilities to announce that it was over and ensure all players knew to stop, she said.
Peters Township Police Chief Harry Fruecht said students consulted with his officers before starting the game and were advised it was a bad idea. They proceeded anyway, he said.
“I could picture getting calls from residents saying, ‘There are people running around my house, and they have guns,’ ” Fruecht said. “In the dark, it’s going to look like a gun, and someone’s going to get hurt.”
Gun- toting players have sparked alarm in Illinois.
Springfield, Ill., Police Chief Donald Kliment issued a statement saying his department received a report last week that a youth was seen wearing a ski mask and displaying what may have been a water pistol.
“This behavior in certain circumstances could be considered criminal conduct,” he said.
In nearby Leland Grove, Gleason, the police chief, said a woman was knocked down in a movie theater by kids playing the game and that police received reports of three young men walking with guns. Police determined they were water guns.
Springfield Police Sgt. Patrick Ross said the game was “a springtime tradition around here” for more than a decade. Students at all three public high schools and at least some of the private high schools in the city played the game, he said.
He said the department wanted “to tell kids this is very, very dangerous — don’t do it.” He said players could be cited for disorderly conduct by raising alarm and provoking “a breach of peace.”
Gleason said: “The kids say it’s a harmless game. Well, part of it is a harmless game, but what they don’t take into consideration is when a neighbor sees someone hiding in bushes, they call it in.”
Police who respond to such a call can easily mistake a water gun for a real gun, Gleason said. “You could have a tragedy right there,” he said.
Keeler said the game has drawn no complaints at his college. He said it was begun to involve students who don’t often take part in campus activities, such as those who spend time on video games.
“Before the Virginia Tech thing, it’s been a really positive thing at our school, and everyone enjoyed doing it,” he said. “We plan on doing it next year.”

The assassin burst from the door of Morton following his target. The crew of professors with Coyne knew something was about to happen as they all looked over their shoulders while going for a costly lunch. Breaking into a run, the assassin let off a round as Coyne lept torwards the open door of the Commons. The round struck home just before Coyne, in midair, crossed the threshold into the Commons and safety, instead sending him across the threshold into assassins afterlife.

After having shot my assassin square in the nuetz, I was informed that M. Lane was about to go on a shooting rampage; I went to go each lunch, and enjoyed my 24 hours of free time. I made my way to the library to inquire whereabouts’ of the Women’s Guest House. I then made my way to the WGH; when I reached the WGH, there were people playing horse shoes next door. I thought they might blow my cover because of the way they were looking at me. I noticed the side door was open, and I crept my way to the door, opened it, and viewed my target sitting on a couch while talking on a phone. I decided to let him finish his phone call [I later found out that he was talking to his grandma]. After he finished talking, I walked up to him, and said his name. As he turned around, I shot him in the left wrist, and M. Lane bleed out to death.
M. Lane was pretty pissed off for a dead man!!!!!

I found out my target was giving tours today at two different times. As he approached the admissions office I watched from a distance and let him be. Following the completion of his last tour I was back again at my same location. As he left the admissions building and began his walk home I road behind in my car. I stopped to let him cross in front of me and then as his back was turned I hit the breaks, put my car in park and hopped out in full pursuit. I popped a round sending my target home for an early spirn break. Game Over
Fair play. I thought my assassin was putting his car in park to join the huge numbers of people going into the Post Office already, and only realized in time to be struck by his dart. Bravo, Bravo.

I was alerted to where abouts of my target by one of my spies(well done balding eagle). I then called my assistant Dangerous Dong and we headed toward the moans rear exit. While we were waiting for balding eagle to report that even was leaving the moans my second assistant, Waffles “Boo” Johnson, was luckly walking by. We evacuated my car and jumped into “Boo” mobile.
After twenty min. Evan walked out with two body gaurds. They quickly jumped into an injured bball players car and drove off. “Boo” executed to perfection the rules of following a car. When they exited the car they were headed toward Carp. Y. “Boo” sped up beside them and sent my death dart into his back. Evan took the kill graciously and told me who my next target was and we all drove off. A much deserved pat on the back goes to Balding Eagle, Waffles “Boo” Johnson, and Dangerous Dong.

I made my way over to South Colonnade around 3:15 and hung out with a friend while plotting my next move. Anxious to assassinate my target, I walked inconspicuously towards East House. I approached my target’s room in south colonnade and checked the handle. UNLOCKED!
I entered the room and checked each desk for pictures. Bingo, I had the right room. My target has the bed- desk combo that you might find in Cushing, a bed lofted above a desk. Fortunately, he had put up a curtain surrounding his entire bed so that incoming light would not wake him in the morning or perhaps after a mid- day nap. I climbed into his bed, fluffed a pillow, and began to wait. The clock in his bed said 3:33 so I figured he’d be back by at least 3:55 or 4:00 if he had an afternoon class.
Unaware of anyone else in the room, I heard his roommate come out of the bathroom. I tried to remain silent and motionless as his roommate was typing a paper. However, I moved my arm to a more comfortable position and the bed creaked. My target’s roommate yelled “Mac”, “Mac”. I didn’t respond and his roommate continued to type. Not 10 minutes later Mac walks in, stands beside his bed, and takes off his book bag. At that moment I lifted the curtain, aimed my weapon, and fired.
As I left, his roommate said “hey, what if I was like jerkin off or somethin.” I responded with “I guess I would have had to ignore it.”

As he approached the door and exited I followed closely behind. It was time to handle some business. While he was involved in a conversation just outside I came from behind and interupted by calling his name. As he turned I squeezed a round off sending him to his maker.

I shot and miss earlier this morning, but dodged his shots. This afternoon I knew he had a test in Bagby so I planned to wait for him, but as I approached the building he saw me and hid in the basement of Johns. I waited for him and on his walk to Bagby I ran up on him, he saw me, his shots missed and he fell to the ground as I shot him. He got up slammed his gun on the ground and yelled as I picked up my dart and ran away.

Going about my professional business, I was approached by one who would otherwise be a most loyal Hampden- Sydney brother. Together we spoke, I, listening more than speaking, hearing his concerns, searching for helpful answers to his questions, when…POP!...from beside me came the awful sound- – the projectile striking me just above my right elbow. The wretched sensation of a velcro- tipped nerf dart on my patterned tweed coat- sleeve was nearly unbearable, but not nearly so much as that of betrayal. Let this be a warning to you…trust no one and know the face of your enemies. Old Nerf Balls breaths no more.

Some people have been asking about shields. You can defend yourself by using an object as a shield if it is in your hands. You could potentially use a backpack if you had it off and in your hands. Also books, umbrellas, etc…

It was an exciting afternoon. During my last class, my assassin came to the door to let me know he was watching me. I cautiously approached my dorm after class but got a call as I was about to put my key into the door leading to my room. A source let me know that my target had been sighted. I made my way to his location just in time to see my target walk into his building. I went into the building and began my recon of his floor. I was checking out the bathrooms when opportunity struck. I heard Shawn, the RA of the floor, knocking on a door. Could it be? It was David’s door. I listened as a conversation began through to door. I patiently waited, however, for the most opportune moment. I heard David’s door open and then footsteps as the two moved across the hall. I went through the bathroom. I peaked around the corner. David’s back was turned to me. I raised my weapon from the alert and took the shot. The round struck him in the back of the head. I then walked over, collected the spent round, and asked if it was David. It was. We talked for a few minutes and then I evaced out of the area. Just another example of how “fortune favors the brave”.

I waited outside of Bagby for the final class of the day knowing that he would be exiting from either the front or back door as it is not his habit to exit the side. Unfortunately he had changed cloths upon exiting class. His face covered, his sweater changed and wearing sunglasses i didn’t immediately recognize him. After circling the building a few times i noticed he was waiting beside the steps of the back exit. As he waited for his target he was unaware that he was in my sights. He stood there unwittingly totally covered and then i shot. Still unaware as the bullet struck he died in anguish.

Phase 1 complete. I started talking to her, having a fake argument, and slipped behind Brett and his loyal bodyguards. When I was about fifteen feet away, I could hear him laughing nervously and looking all around. It was time. I hung up my phone and sprinted at him, like a cheetah flies at an unsuspecting gazelle. He was fast, but not fast enough. A whistling, midnight- black Nerf dart sealed the poor man’s fate. Then I shook his hand, introuced myself, and camouflaged quickly back into the environment. Done.

Once I shot him in the back, I caught the ricocheted bullet—so as to leave no evidence—and ran back into the shadows and faded into the night.

A little bird told me that Tim was working out in the Fitness Center, so I went over to identify him. I saw him working out with the rowing machine and decided to wait outside for him. When he walked out, he looked over at me and then started to jog back to his room. I wasn’t in a good position to shoot him, so I got in my car and beat him back to his room. I was waiting for him at his door when he got back, and the job was done.

Alias
When Blake A was originally involved we were going to use real names. The Deans are not involved at this point and a good number of people want to use an alias so I decided to let them.
I sent out an email a few weeks ago that talked about this – I’m sorry if you missed it. You can still change your alias on the site.
After a round or so everything should even out and you will fade into anonymity.

Window Issues
The original wording was that you could enter a room with an unlocked door or open window.
Some people thought that the wording meant that an unlocked door and an open window were two distinctly different situations.
To clear this up the wording has been changed to unlocked for both situations.
From this point forward you can enter any door or window that is unlocked.

I knew Michael and had to do something special for him. On Saturday, I came over to my friend Jim’s room to hang out with some friends. Michael happens to live in the area. I sat in a position so he would not be able to see my weapon. He came in and we hung out and talked for about 10 minutes. After a reasonable amount of time had passed for him to grow comfortable, I drew my weapon and asked him, “Where would you like it, Michael?” “In my ass!” “Fine, get up.” I shot him in the ass. He then asked me, “Are you serious? Did you have me?” “Yes, I did”.

I knocked on Knox’s door around 1:00 Saturday afternoon. After a couple of minutes Knox opened the door and I shot him in the chest. Unfortunately for him, he thought the game was paused all weekend and had no idea that he was going to be assasinated. I guess he can take solace in the fact that for him, the game really is paused all weekend.

Everyone has been asking about the Costa Del Mar thing tomorrow. I thought the whole thing was in the T.I. so I didn’t give it much thought. Apparently their will be activities taking place outside as well.

Some guys are having a bit to much fun with the paranoia. You cannot go around shooting anyone who isn’t your target just to mess with them. If anyone does this from here on out you will be booted the game. You are free to play mind games but you cannot actually pull a gun on someone.

Well I figured out who peter was and went to him room to scope him out a little bit. I found out that we had the same classe together. I saw him in the commons before class and he still couldnt figure out that he was my target. I later went to class, and skipped out of it before him. We talked with a few guys we knew then next theing, CLAP CLAP and he was eliminated. He still was shocked that I was the person the whole time.

It was a brisk March evening; the trained nose could smell nerf off in the distance. None of this was on my mind however, because I was consumed by something else. Assassination. I could feel the tension rising as I climbed the 4 ancient flights of stairs in Cushing Hall. When I reached the top, I knew it was time to do what needed to be done. I opened the portal to his dormitory like a man who knew his wife was getting railed by the postman on the other side, but to my dismay I found the room vacant with clothes, trash, empty bottles and spent needles strewn about like a Harlem flat. My heart sank. What next? Do I lay in wait for my target? Do I try again some other time? Right about then I hear a voice coming up the stairs, so I hide around the corner. As the voice neared the top I readied my weapon. Then the unknown conversator turned to face me. He was wearing a lime green shirt like a girl off of a Fanta commercial and talking to someone on the other end in a coo- ish sounding voice; obviously either his girlfriend or his gay lover. So then I trained my laser on his chest and let the orange arrow of destiny fly. Assassinated.

An unfortunate event for Mr. Clemmer. One gray day, which was warm with love and harmony, Mr. Clemmer recieved a phone call from “Chopper.” . . . Chopper was in need of a blue sweater vest which Mr. Clemmer had. The two agreed to meet outside of Morton Hall. So Chopper raced over before Clemmer’s arrival and bumped into Prof. Coyne. Coyne then asked “Would you like me to distract Robert as he is giving you the sweater- vest.” As a “wise” man I was quite obliged to the said offer. So going outside to Robert, Coyne said “Hey Robert, what’s going on.” And as the two began to converse, Robert heard running behind him, but thinking that it was only his trustworthy and loyal friend “Chopper,” Robert succame to the painful agony of being backstabbed by his honorable friend and senator.

About 9:54am, on Thursday, outside of the main door to Winston I got my target. I just walked up and said “what’s up” as he was about to get on his bike. I shot him in the gut, a solid kill looking back at it cause the stories that I’ve heard today are that some kids are missing their one shot. Anyway, I had to wait awhile cause the class he was in was taking a test… a very long test. It sucks though because he didn’t know the game had started so I felt bad afterwards. Oh well, on to the next target.

I went to walmart with Mark Henson on Thursday morning at around 1am to buy nerf guns, knowing very well I had him as a target. I told him I had to go back to campus to study for a test the next day. When I returned to campus I went to the MSU house were he lives and waited til he got back to campus. When I heard him coming in the house I told one of his housemates to call him to their rooom. When he came to the room I was hiding behind the door. Mark walked in with a his nerf gun in a bag. I came out from behind the door and asked him if he had a reciept for the gun; then I shot him in the chest. Mark turned around and went back to the store to return the gun. Ron Johnson- 1 Mark- 0
