Assassins games tend to have a wide variety of weapons. In the suggested default rules the two allowed weapons are spoons and socks. The reason for these weapon choices is that spoons and socks are both harmless and easy to find. By giving everyone access to these harmless weapons, the game host can level the playing field and ensure that everyone has a weapon.
In the past, we have found that making rules with less accessible weapons makes some players never even procure a weapon. By sticking with things that are in every person's house already, it equips everyone with the tools to make a successful elimination.
